Card Centering Explained: Ratios and Photo Perspective
What a centering ratio measures
Centering compares opposing printed borders on the card itself. For left and right border widths L and R, the left share is 100 × L ÷ (L + R) and the right share is 100 × R ÷ (L + R). Borders measuring 3 mm and 2 mm produce a 60/40 ratio. Equal widths produce 50/50. Repeat the calculation for top and bottom. These ratios describe geometry; they do not by themselves define a universal grading-company score.
Choose the correct boundaries
Measure between the physical edge and the relevant printed frame, using corresponding points on opposing sides. Do not measure the outer edge of a sleeve, slab, shadow or camera crop. A decorative illustration may not be the intended printed frame. Borderless designs, unusual layouts and partially hidden edges can prevent reliable measurement. Record that uncertainty instead of forcing a precise ratio.
Why an angled photograph looks off-center
A camera tilted relative to the card changes apparent widths: the near side can look larger than the far side. Cropping, lens distortion, curved cards and blurred corners create additional error. A pixel ratio from the uncorrected photograph can therefore describe the camera view instead of the physical print. Retaking a photograph with the camera parallel to the card is often more useful than debating its original score.
How BAO handles perspective
BAO attempts to locate the four card corners and rectify the card plane before comparing borders. Perspective correction depends on correct corner and printed-boundary detection. It cannot recover an edge outside the photograph or reliably reconstruct detail hidden by glare. An uncertain boundary should reduce confidence or trigger recapture guidance. BAO centering remains a photographic estimate, rather than a calibrated physical measurement.
Take a useful centering photograph
Place the card flat on a contrasting background. Keep a small margin outside every edge. Position the camera approximately parallel to the card, avoid wide-angle closeups, and check focus before uploading the original file. Photograph the back as well as the front. If an estimate looks surprising, compare another straight-on capture and inspect the physical borders before drawing a condition conclusion.
Ratios and final grades
A centering ratio is only one part of a condition assessment. Corners, edges and surface wear also matter, and grading services can apply different standards. BAO is not calibrated to reproduce PSA, TAG, CGC, BGS or SGC grades. Its report should be read with confidence, visible evidence and recapture instructions. Avoid treating an uncertain centering measurement as proof that a clean card has a printing defect.
