How card centering ratios work
Centering compares the two opposing printed borders on an axis. If the left border is 3 mm and the right border is 2 mm, the total is 5 mm: the left side represents 60 percent and the right side 40 percent, producing a 60/40 horizontal ratio. Repeat the same calculation for the top and bottom borders. A perfectly balanced axis is 50/50.
Measure the card, not the camera crop
The measurement should run from the physical card edge to the relevant printed boundary. Do not measure the outside of a sleeve, slab, shadow or image crop. If you are measuring pixels from a photograph, use a straight-on capture whenever possible. Camera tilt can make the near side appear larger than the far side, which means an uncorrected pixel measurement may describe perspective rather than the actual printed card.
Why some cards are difficult to measure
Borderless cards, full-art designs and unusual printed frames may not provide an obvious inner boundary. Curved cards, cropped edges, glare and blur can add more uncertainty. When the correct boundary is ambiguous, record that uncertainty instead of forcing a precise ratio. BAO’s photo-based grading workflow attempts perspective correction before centering analysis and can request a recapture when the card plane or printed frame is unreliable.
Centering is only one part of grading
This calculator deliberately does not convert a ratio into a guaranteed professional grade. Grading-company standards can differ and can change, while corners, edges and surface condition also affect the final result. Use the ratio as a measurement, then review the current criteria of the grading company you plan to use and inspect the rest of the card under appropriate lighting.
