Photograph both sides of the Pokémon card
The back often reveals edge whitening and corner wear that is easy to miss from the front. Keep all four corners in frame and leave a small amount of contrasting background around the card so the physical card plane can be detected. A front-only image cannot provide the same evidence as a complete front-and-back capture.
English and Japanese cards can have different visual cues
Pokémon layouts vary by language, era and set. Full-art, borderless and textured designs may not expose the same printed frame as a traditional bordered card. BAO should not force a centering measurement when it cannot establish the correct printed boundary with enough confidence. In those cases, the visible corners, edges and surface may still provide useful condition evidence.
Holo and textured surfaces need careful lighting
Holographic reflections can resemble whitening, scratches or bright surface defects. Begin with soft, even light and keep the camera steady. If a suspicious mark appears only inside glare, take another photograph with the light moved. A second lighting angle can help distinguish a real scratch from reflection on foil or textured material.
Sleeves and slabs can change the analysis
A removable sleeve can create glare and soften edge detail, while a graded slab can add scratches or reflections that belong to the holder instead of the card. Where it is safe to handle a raw card, photograph it outside a removable sleeve. Never open a professionally graded slab just to use BAO; treat the holder as a known limitation and inspect the report accordingly.
Use the result as pre-grading evidence
BAO does not authenticate Pokémon cards, certify an official grade or guarantee the result of a professional submission. Use the estimate to identify areas that deserve closer inspection, compare another clean capture when a result is surprising, and decide whether the card is worth professional grading based on your own goals, fees and handling risk.
